Featured Pokemon: Exeggutor

My Exeggutor is named "Frondly Face."

Greetings trainers!

Eggs? Coconuts? Not sure... But if you're looking for a frondly face, look no further. What you can be sure of is that Exeggutor is one of the best Pokemon currently in the game, and one of the best defenders out there. One of the main reasons for this is because of Vaporeon's overwhelming popularity, but the other is because Exeggutor is a Psychic type. Psychic types are really good in the Generation 1 metagame. Almost nothing takes Psychic moves well except for other Psychic Pokemon. So, what else does Exeggutor have going for it? Well...

Attacking
My other Exeggutor is
named "Face Palm"

Zen Headbutt + Solarbeam
Zen Headbutt + Psychic

Exeggutor isn't exactly an efficient dodger, but the egg-conuts more than make up for it with STAB Psychic options in Zen Headbutt and Confusion. Zen Headbutt's shorter cooldown makes it the move with the better DPS, and the better choice for attacking. While 1.05 seconds is quite long, Exeggutor will still be able to dodge long-charging moves like Hydro Pump, Ice Punch, and Ice Beam... if you're quick to notice and have a bit of luck on your side.

Defending
Confusion + Psychic
Confusion + Seed Bomb
Confusion + Solar Beam

Confusion's higher base damage makes it the default best quick move, but Exeggutor's moveset is blessed with competent defending moves. No matter what Exeggutor you get, it'll be great (Zen Headbutt is still quite good). Solar Beam is the only charge move that needs explaining, just because it's extremely easy to dodge. But to its credit, by having a larger energy cost, Exeggutor gets to continue using its strong Quick Moves for longer, and if it does hit, it'll deal more DPS than either Psychic or Seed Bomb. Even if they dodge, if they spend three seconds swiping to dodge, your DPS trade during that time is net neutral, so its psych-out factor doesn't hurt its net DPS as bad as you might think.

Psychic is a great charge move with a reasonably short cooldown. Seed Bomb's lower base damage isn't as attractive as Psychic, nor Solar Beam, but Seed Bomb has the shortest cooldown (2.4s) of any of Exeggutor's charge moves. By having a lower energy requirement, combined with Exeggutor's high HP, Seed Bomb starts firing off constantly near the end of a battle.

Base stats and typing
Attack: 232
Defence: 164
Stamina: 190

What a fantastic Attack stat! Exeggutor is the strongest Psychic-type user, and has the third-strongest Attack stat currently available in the game (and #2 is Flareon... so...). This makes up for Exeggutor's middling Defence, which means that while Exeggutor takes a lot of damage from capable attackers, it also dishes it out just as well. A 190 base Stamina means that Exeggutor has plenty of HP to attack with, and more importantly, a very good amount of HP for Gym-defender mechanics (2x boost to HP). As a result, Exeggutor makes one of the best gym defenders, having fantastic damage output, and a very good Stamina to boot.

Not so fearsome in the face of EGGS!
Common Pokemon Exeggutor deals with

Exeggutor can be a great Pokemon to use against common defenders like Vaporeon, Slowbro, and Poliwrath. Other than Vaporeon, each of these has a move that Exeggutor has to watch out for (Ice), but so would a versatile attacker like Dragonite. Exeggutor straight-up counters Pokemon like Vileplume, and all-Grass Venusaur and Victreebel. Exeggutor's greatest asset in attacking is getting to resist opposing Psychic attacks like Zen Headbutt and Confusion from the likes of Golduck, Clefable, Hypno, and Snorlax. The egg's monstrous attack stat makes it a strong attacker, and its decent Defence coupled with strong HP make it a Pokemon that can take a beating.

Checks and counters

Exeggutor is one of those Pokemon that is very difficult to deal with. It has a double-weakness to Bug, but the only competent Bug-type in the game is Parasect, which has too little Defence and Stamina to be worth bringing to an opposing Gym. Still, Parasect with X-Scissor can be a great way to take down an Exeggutor for the sake of Gym prestige.

Dragonite makes for a great Pokemon that doubly resists Exeggutor's Grass-type charge moves. Arcanine is also a great attacker able to resist Grass. But against a Confusion + Psychic Exeggutor, you can also use Ice-types like Lapras, Dewgong, or Cloyster to trade damage decently (though the latter two are definitively worse). Simpy put, Exeggutor has no real hard counter just because nothing wants to take multiple Confusions. Confusion hurts.

is named "Palmistree"
Final say

Exeggutor's definitively one of the best Pokemon in Pokemon GO right now. It's definitely the strongest Grass-type, really thanks to the fact that it's also a Psychic type. What this makes Exeggutor great at is being a Vaporeon counter. While both Dragonite and Exeggutor can resist Water Gun, Exeggutor's defending moveset hits Vaporeon harder and is likely to hit switch-ins harder. It gets STAB on its ideal defending moves (unlike Dragonite), and its middling defences are made up by a lack of exploitable weaknesses. You're also guaranteed to get a good defending Exeggutor no matter what you evolve, which is a fantastic trait for a 50-candy evolution; unlike its fellow Tier-1 defenders, you won't be getting a Mud Slap Poliwrath or Water Gun + Water Pulse Slowbro.

Given the guarantee of a good moveset, and its great utility as both an attacker and defender, Exeggcute is probably the best 3km buddy out there. If you're looking to get good Pokemon fast, Exeggcute is definitely at the top of my personal Buddy recommendation list.

Cheers,
Let's GO!
